5 Job Interview Tips That Aren't a Given

Your resume may be impressive, but if you can’t communicate well during a job interview, you won’t make the cut. Every candidate should already know these common job interview tips:
  • Dress to impress
  • Bring a copy of your resume and portfolio
  • Arrive 15 minutes early
  • Master your industry’s FAQs
  • Research the company in advance

But if you want to get the job, you need to do more than Google a list of common interview questions. Here are 5 tips that will help you ace your job interview:

Clean up your social media
Once you get the call to come in for a job interview, check your social media for any public videos and photos that could send the wrong message to your future employer. Checking a candidate’s social media account has become the norm for recruiters, so you want to be sure that there are no incriminating posts. It’s always best to keep your accounts as private as possible.

Be concise and relevant
Do not answer questions with just a ‘yes’ or ‘no’. Giving generic answers will not make you stand out from the other candidates. Share your experiences and knowledge. However, do not overshare. When asked a question, be sure to stick to the topic.
Give only answers that are relevant to the job you’re applying to.

Say it in numbers, not just words
If you’re asked to share your experiences, achievements or past projects, provide data to back it up. Hiring managers want to hear statistics and figures because it gives them a more accurate measure of your success. Providing concrete facts shows your proficiency in the industry.

Do not strive for perfection
Own up to your weaknesses. Employers are not looking for perfection, they’re looking for someone that is self-aware. If asked for your greatest weakness in your interview, answer with a work-related weakness and provide a sample of how you’re working to overcome it. For example, “In the past, I have had some trouble with time management. I’ve been working on this by listing all of my deliverables for the day and identifying the ones I should prioritize.”

Turn the tables around
Ask your own questions. This shows the employer that you’re interested in being a part of the company. A job interview is also your opportunity to learn more about your future job and employer.
